Before, during and after treatment.
This mother-of-pearl and silk fan needed cleaning and
repair. The three silk panels had slits between each rib
with some additional areas of loss. The lace had also come
unattached to the front guard in areas. Some of the ribs
and back guard had breaks, some of which had been
previously repaired and failed. These repairs had been made
with a line tape that extended out from the rib in some
cases, yellowed and covered the design of the guard.
The fan was vacuumed overall. The mother-of-pearl elements
were further surface cleaned. The adhesive tape that had
been used in the earlier repairs was gently removed. The
tears in the fan were secured with coated Stabiltex secured
with slight heat. The curled and distorted sequins were
flattened with warm water and a slightly heated
micro-spatula and resecured.This mother-of-pearl and silk
