This project from the Department of Military and Naval Affairs included a military frock coat with matching pants, a military coatee from 1812, and a sword belt and hanger. The owner, Col. Elmer Ellsworth, was the founder of the American Zouaves Units and an early Union martyr during the Civil War. The Ellsworth coat and pants had small holes that were filled with cotton fabric and stabilized. The bullet hole was left untouched because of its historic significance. All items were conserved and stored with padded support.
