Before, during and after treatment.
This sampler had been mounted on cardboard, wrapped with a
plastic film and secured with staples. Some of the staples
went through the sampler itself. Although the package had
been intended to protect the sampler, the materials used
were not stable and were off-gassing and causing harm. The
focus of the treatment was to better preserve the sampler
by surrounding it with archival materials, as well as
remove surface dirt and soiling.
The sampler was removed from its mount and vacuumed.
Staples were carefully removed. Wet cleaning was performed
to remove the soluble products present and the sampler was
rinsed several times to remove yellowing. The sampler was
attached with stitchs a new mount was constructed from
acid-free board with a fabric covering. The sampler was
framed with ultraviolet-filtered Plexiglas.
